Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
