Social Media Content Creators Driving Parallel Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug

An underground economy for unlicensed slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to new investigations.

Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Viewers are encouraged to contact these accounts privately for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.

Active Commerce on Social Networks

Additionally, a robust market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share comparison images, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Sellers market the substance there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for purchases.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

This medication is an investigational injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients lose up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Experts Express Worries

However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to individuals administering substances of unknown origin.

Several experts stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising price of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Implementation

Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators attempt to circumvent the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still breach medicines, marketing, and customer regulations, risking penalties, legal action or prison.

Service Reaction and Material Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic content and banned associated keywords and search suggestions. The organization said it was dedicated to maintaining the service secure and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Operations

Research also found groups with up to 9,000 members marketing the experimental drug using the platform's built-in search feature, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of users, populated with images of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed guides for preparing or injecting at home.

After moments of joining one community, a seller posted contact information, where the majority of transactions occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a alleged laboratory certificate. None inquired about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Product Details and Costs

Within these communities, messages show black plastic packages with postal service stickers, stating to contain new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a injector should be used, sellers give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it actively moderated dangerous content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Warnings

“People are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital versions may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in interest to current cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her staff has already encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Producer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet approved … may subject patients to potentially serious health risks”.
