European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
